About the project
Japanese joinery, and decades of writing software
Kumiki exists because the two things I do — Japanese carpentry and writing software — turned out to be the same thing.
Like many others, I went headfirst into Japanese carpentry during COVID. I've also been designing games and software with some intensity for decades. Kumiki is the combined inspiration of my hobbies.
Commercial CAD software carries a hefty price tag and leaves plenty to be desired for woodworking. Clunky interfaces with limited parametric features aren't ideal for representing repeating patterns of joints that follow systematic geometric rules.
When I originally created Kumiki, I figured few people would be willing to write CODE to make their DESIGNS, even with Kumiki designed to be as simple and accessible as it is. By the time I released it, though, the agentic coding ship had sailed. I won't say much about that, except that it has, as a matter of fact, made Kumiki more — not less — accessible as a CAD program.
I hope you enjoy using it as much as I enjoy making it. Kumiki is free and open source!
